Among more than 12.000 caves in Slovenia, the Postojna Cave is first one tourists choose to visit. But usually it is not the least one.

Postojna Cave lays next to Postojna town, only 50 kilometers form Slovenia capital – Ljubljana. Near Postojna Cave is Predjama Castle, where every year Erasmus knight tournament has it’s place. Lots of visitors likes to visit nearby Park of military history in Pivka, too.

Postojna Cave system consists of approximately 20 kilometers long underworld system, which places it among 100 longest underground complexes in the world. Where caves are not consistent among each other, the connection was made artificially. There is cca. 1.5 kilometer of man made passages.

Tourism in Postojna Cave started early in 19th century. It was electrically powered in 1884, before that tracks for cave carts were already laid. Later on Postojna Cave got first real cave train, which is transporting tourist from then on through kilometers of cave.

Barcelona is one of the biggest towns on the Iberian peninsula. It is also the most visited town and not only in the region but Barcelona is probably the most visited town in the Mediterranean.

Trade Center

Barcelona is also probably the most important trade center in the Mediterranean, it is a extremely important port that is growing to be one of the most important European ports. You can travel fast and conveniently from Barcelona to other towns in Spain, but also to France, Italy, north Africa and the tourist favorite relaxing point, the Balearic Islands. If you travel to Barcelona, you will land on the second largest airport in Spain, located on the outskirts of the city. Madrid is the only biggest airport, but this is understandable, because Madrid is the capital city of Spain. Barcelona on the other hand is the capital of the most eastern Spanish autonomous community, called Catalonia, on the French border.

The border is really close to the town and you can travel to France in a a short car trip, and Barcelona has a great connection to other major towns on the North, East and West. This is also the reason, that the developed in the past and that people still pick it as the city to move into. Barcelona is home to more than a million and a half, but if you also take all the outskirts into account, the number increases three times. The whole Catalonia region, no matter that it is only the sixth biggest in Spain, has more than seven million inhabitants.

Christopher Columbus

The history of the town Barcelona is tightly tied to Old Greece, but partly also to Carthaginian and the Imperial Rome. Later the Muslim tribes arrived, but lost the last battles before 1500 and left. Barcelona and the rest of Spain sailed to America and colonized the new world. If you visit the boardwalk in Las Ramblas, and if you are in Barcelona, you should not miss it, you can still see a statue of Columbus in the port.

Barcelona is also a fair town, that has also hosted the World expo in 1888. On the outskirts of the town starts the world famous Montjuic, the beautiful green hill, that hosts different excellent Museums, the new Olimpia stadium and other important sports facilities, that were build the the Olympic games, hosted in Barcelona in 1992.

From here you can take the lift directly to the main port of Barcelona, where you can admire the see life in a modern aquarium or take a walk around the wold trade center or see and taste different quinsies that are indigenous to the part of Spain.

Slovenia is full of Karst phenomenons, because the Karst covers around two thirds of the country. Skocjan caves are a achievement of the Mother nature that every nation would be proud of, but they are in the shadow of the world known Postojnska cave. They are not as famous, but they are on the UNESCO World heritage list since 1986.

The region park Skocjan caves is a 413 hectares (around 1000 acres) big protected park. It is run by a public institution that was established just for the purpose of taking care and protecting the park. The Park Skocjan caves is also a part of the UN Ramsar convention, that is covered by the UNESCO and takes care of internationally important wetlands, especially those that are wetland bird habitats. Skocjan caves have been included ad the first underground wetland, that is an important habitat for specialized and often endemic species of landlocked and water cave animals.

The Skocjan caves are also inhabited by different animal species and plants, and a lot of them are endemic to the region. You can find the Rock Dave, bats, Winter Wren, dormouse and even foxes. If you see through the water species, is the Proteus, or the human fish that can be up to 20 centimeters (8 inches) long.

The biggest underground Canyon in the world

It is the special region and the embossed surroundings with the Mediterranean climate that make the Skocjan caves so special. The river Reka (the river is named River in Slovenian) disappears underground in the Skocjan caves region and flows underground for the next 30 kilometers. In the millions of years the water of the river Reka carved the biggest underground Canyon in the world. The Skocjan caves are full of different Karst phenomenas, rapids, waterfalls, siphons, stalactites, limestone pillars, sinkholes, halls and other phenomenas, that you can fin only in Karst caves. The halls are something special, the biggest one is over 300 meters (1000 feet) long, approx. 90 meters (300 feet) wide and over 100 meters (320 feet) high. The peak gets up to 146 meters or 479 feet.

The Skocjan caves are a unique and self sufficient system of Karst caves, that were first mentioned in the Antique. Today you can visit them, and even enjoy a guide that will take you on a 1.5 hours long (or short) tour of the caves. You will walk a path of almost 3 kilometers (1,8 miles) and will walk up to 150 meters or 480 feet underground.

Elite Coastal Tourism

Portorož is a great coastal destination on the Slovenian coast. It is a part of the Piran municipality and it’s roots started in the roman times. Today you can see a salt warehouse and the Maritime High school, but underneath it were found remains of a small port and a fish farm.

Later in the history Porotorž saw the Byzantine, Lombard and Slavic inhabitants move in and out, and it started to cooperate with the Venice republic, and this resulted into Benedictines moving into the city. They build the first Benedictine monasteries in the town and the church of St. Mary of the Rose in the 13th century. The church gave its name to the port nearby that was called Portus sanctae Mariae de Rosae, and it probably gave its name to the town later on. Portorož was known as a healing town already in the 13th century. The Benedictines used the healing salt and mud from the Salina to heal different diseases. Even more written evidence on how they healed rheumatism were found from the 17th century.

Inhabitants of Porotorž and surrounding colonies used what the nature and the sea gave to them. Next to fishing and salt-making, shipbuilding, brickery and other craftsmanships developed.

Palace Hotel

Portorož began developing into a tourist site already in the 1865, when a Swiss trader started renting rooms for over 200 people, but the important and big hotels were build after 1890, that also meant, that public beaches were open. The finest hotel in Portorož was build in 1910 and was called the hotel Palace cur Hotel, but was latter called just the Palace hotel. It was renovated from the bottom up and is now a Kempinski Palace hotel.

There are over 20 big hotels in Portorož, a casino, pools and spas, public and private beaches and a port. Portorož is one of the cutest and elites tourist destinations in Slovenia that should not be missed by any tourist traveling to Slovenia.

Prague is a beautiful city, through which flows the river Vltava.
The Golden Prague

Title Golden Prague is not the only title that this beautiful city received in its history. The city certainly won’t disappoint anyone. Every visitor should definitely see a Hradčany palace and famous bridges across the river Vltava, especially infamous Charles Bridge, which was set by Charles IV, after which it got its name. St. Vitus Cathedral and Karlštejn Castle, magnificent fortress above the forested valley of the Berounka river, were also built during his reign.

Architecture lovers will surely come to their own, because Prague offers some worldwide known products. Prague is marked with architectural products of Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, whose products can be admired also in Vienna and Ljubljana.

Prague has developed slowly, the city was formed in similar way as many other cities across Europe, by merging some small towns, villages and later even pilot settlements. Today, Prague has more than 1.2 million inhabitants, of which nearly 50,000 are students, because Prague is also University City.

Transport across Prague is possible by tram, which runs over more than 130 kilometers of trails, even far away from the city centre. Although the fast metro has only 40 stations deep under the city center, it transports one-third of all passengers.

Central Palace

If Prague is your travel destination, you must see central palace and at least one of many castles. Take a walk along the river Vltava or take a ride on it with a boat. You can also have a lunch on which of them.

You are welcome in Prague in every time in the year and continental climate gives you four conspicuous seasons. In winter you can enjoy the view of nearby hills, yet in summer you can taste a good beer in the city centre or in one of many pubs along the river Vltava.

120 islands and 400 bridges

The story tells, that Venice was founded by refugees, fleeing from the Huns army to the small islands. Around 120 islands is today linked with around 400 bridges. The islands are now separated with 170 canals, that you can enjoy with a boat, small cruise ship, but the biggest and most famous canal can be also used even by the biggest cruise ships. But you can only feel the real spirit of Venice, if you see it from a gondola, a special local rowing boat. Gondoliers, that will take you around Venice, dressed in traditional gowns and with a traditional smile on their face. If you are lucky, they will also sing for you and your company.

Traveling to Venice is simple, you can take a bus or a fast train. If you travel longer distances, you should land on the Marco Polo airport, that is located less than 10 kilometers from Venice and then take a boat, that operates as a public transport. If you will travel by car, you can park in one of many parking houses.

Different hotels are located in Venice, and you won’t have any problems finding a vacancy, except if you travel to Venice with thousands of tourists, that visit Venice to see the famous Venice festival. It is a good idea to rent a room in Venice, because all the major sightseeing places will be just around the corner. Or you can look for a small or big hotel around Venice, on mainland, a lot of them in the direction of Treviso.

Piazza San Marco

Venice invites you all year around, and even people, that claim to know Venice, find interesting new things every time. Just walk the small streets away from the famous tourist places, like the Piazza San Marco, Rialto bridge, Doge’s Palace or the Basilica de San Marco. These places are packed with tourists all year around, that means that you will have to wait in lines to enter some of the museums, palaces or churches, even several hours or reserve a place in advance.

Venice is a town of more than a quarter of million inhabitants, but it can show you even more. Most people enjoy most, when they can see the small streets, marvelous buildings, bridges, squares, churches or monasteries in peace, without the company of tourists.

There are literally thousands of small islands, to which you can travel by boat lines, marked with numbers like buses. The most famous is the Murano island, where you will be astonished by famous glassblowers. A Murano glass souvenir is a piece that you have to take home, next to the Venice carnival masks, that you can buy in all different shapes, colors, sizes and made from different materials.

If you like the feeling of a busy street, Venice will become your favorite city at your first visit. When you are leaving the town, don’t forget to look back, just to have a nice memory of the beautiful town.

Between East and West

And not only from Austria. In the UNO City (Vienna’s international center) business man and women from all around the world gather together and make it more than just a part of Vienna. The modern metropolis finally found its life again. For decades, Vienna lived torn between west and east, closer to important big cities, hidden behind the iron curtain. You can almost kick a football from outskirts of Vienna to Bratislava’s outskirts. Other major cities, Prague, Zagreb or Ljubljana are just a couple of hours away, making Vienna the center crossing of all most important capitals of the Central Europe.

The development of Vienna has been almost unbelievable in the last years, its Airport, now with a new, modern passenger and cargo terminal and a great railway connection, is one of the most important airports in Europe. All arriving passengers can enjoy different ways of public transport to travel to Vienna’s downtown. Different parts of the city are connected with subway lines, first build in 1987, tram and bus connections are fast and on almost always on time. You can buy one ticket and use all the different ways to travel around Vienna. The romance in you will awaken, if you rent a coach, that will take you around Vienna and surprisingly, the trip will not suck out your wallet completely.

Hofburd and Belveder palace

Different cultures and nations have entered and left Vienna in the past, Celts, ancient Roman, Turks, and later on French, Germans and Soviets have now left and Vienna is Austrian again. The history of the town is most connected to the Hapsburg, who ruled the city and the country for 640 years, since the battle at Marchfeld in 1278. Vienna’s rulers are known around the world, Maximilian, Joseph Ferdinand or Maria Theresa of Austria, names that left their influence on almost every palace, church, museum and in other places, that are admired by thousands of tourists every day.

You need to see the Hofburd and Belveder palace, the Schönbrunn palace with its zoo, Albertina Graphic arts collection, Natural sciences museum, the Parliament building, town hall and the giant Riesen rad in the Prater park. Take a short break and enjoy a Wiener Schnitzel or and a piece of the famous Sacher cake. Vienna will show its best sites to you, and it will mesmerize you, all you need to do is take some time to enjoy it, but do not, ever, come with an empty wallet.

Most people see it as a small village lost in the middle of nowhere, but Lipica hosted a number of world known guests, also the British queen Elizabeth II in year 2008.

Mare Farm Lipica

Mare farm Lipica was founded in 1580 by the Austrian Archduke Karel. It was a partially destroyed summer castle, owned by the Trieste Archbishop. The Hapsburg family needed horses, and they choose the Spanish horse, that was known as the best of that time. The climate of Lipica and Karst was similar enough to the Spanish climate, and they controlled the area since the Turkish army left.

A year after Lipica was build it hosted 24 brood mares and 6 studs. As time passed by Lipica was rebuild and it changed. In the time when Emperor Joseph II ruled Austro-Hungarian regions, a barn for the breeding studs was build, a church, and paths for walks were arranged, meadows and forests were prepared.

The famous Lipizzan horse is of course the main guest in Lipica, but they were forced to leave their barns multiple times. In a bold action by the US soldiers right before the end of the 2nd world was tried to protect them from the Red army. They also fled when the army of Napoleon 2nd was approaching. The herd in Lipica was getting smaller and larger, depending on who owned or managed the barns.

Tourists can enjoy a tour of the mare farm, see the dressage program, enroll in riding classes or enjoy any other activity that is offered in Lipica. You can see a Avgust Černigoj permanent exhibition, play a round of golf, or relax and bet a Euro or two in the Casino Lipica.

Ljubljana is also an important traffic route crossing, with an international airport at its borders. Different events have marked its history, in the 2nd World War, it was surrounded by a barb wire fence and turned into a concentration camp. Because of its proud and courageous inhabitants, it was called the Hero City.

Earthquakes were also important in Ljubljana’s history, after the earthquake in 1511, the whole city was rebuild in the Renaissance style , and again after 1895, the city was again rebuild in the Neoclassicist and more important in Secession style.

You can see marks of the great architect Jože Plečnik in most buildings build in the time between the both World Wars, and Plečnik more or less changed the city from the ground. Its heritage is protected by law and admired by tourists and experts.

You can visit Ljubljana in every time of the year, but most tourists would say that you should visit it in December, with its decorations, and when the castle hill is glowing in the hundreds of lights. A special gift awaits the tourists, giant wrapped boxes, that are wells in the summer.
